Maakies
Maakies is Tony Millionaire's brainchild. First of all, we love that name: Tony Millionaire. We would like to think it's the artist's real name. Of course, we know it's not. But it's like with Santa Claus when you were a child. Even when you kind of knew it was a lie, you still kept believing it.
So which bit shall we mention first? The poetry or the cruelty? Let's start with the cruelty.
Yes, the humour in Maakies is black and cruel. Creatures die on a regular basis, only to return in the next gag like Kenny from South Park. And then there's the alcohol, the vomiting, the self-hatred and then more alcohol, more vomiting and more self-hatred.
How does Tony Millionaire get away with it?
Poetry, that's how.
Old fashioned, surreal and steeped in nostalgia. The drawings themselves are poetry. Everything yearns for a bygone era. With lovingly crafted pen-drawings of old houses and nautical themes, Millionaire transports his readers into a parallel world.
Your friends at Funny Little Men are know to have made themselves a T-shirt with above image of drinky crow printed on it. So if you see someone with a T-shirt like that, say hello.
